From the desk of the President

Dear members of SCCC

As 2018 came to an end, the stock exchanges around the world played rollercoaster, the U.S. government was partially closed, the impact of the trade tensions between China and the U.S. could be felt, and investment behavior started to impact global brands. Forecasts are gloomy for 2019…. It is time for the Year of the Pig to start – read on and you will understand why I believe a change for the better is in store.

January has traditionally one week when Switzerland is the focus point of the global media: the WEF in Davos. This year was no different, and the week started with a firework of Chinese related events. On January 21 alone, we had four high-level events on China topics or with Chinese participation. The most prestigious was the «Platform of the Sino-Swiss Innovative Strategic Partnership», attended by China’s Vice President WANG Qishan and the Swiss President Ueli Maurer. The SCCC co-hosted the event together with Economiesuisse and the Swiss Banking Association. SCCC members participated in all panels. The signed MOU ensures that the event will take place on an annual base – stay tuned and participate.
This year’s WEF was dominated by topics that were important to the Chinese economy, in fact, most of Wednesday’s events were related to China, including discussions on «Belt and Road» and its vision, actions and impact. Seeing all the big Chinese brands in Davos conducting events and briefings was just impressive.

The Chinese New Year Concert is a tradition, and as in 2018, we were able to hold a SCCC reception during the concert break. A big thank you to our sponsor SIGA!

As you read this email, we are in the midst of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Hopefully you can take some time off and celebrate with your loved ones. On February 28, the Swiss-Hong Kong Business Association will hold its Chinese New Year Reception; may I ask you to read the announcement on the SCCC website and register? The event is RSVP only.

Now, let me shed some light on the 2019 Year of the Pig. The Pig is one of the most beloved animal signs in the Chinese zodiac. According to the five elements, 2019 is the Year of the Earth Pig. Earth Pig persons are extremely kind and thoughtful as well as sensible and realistic. The Earth Pig is good at peacekeeping and resolving conflicts. It is not only hard working but also reliable and ethical.

According to Chinese astrology, 2019 is a great year to make money, and a good year to invest!

2019 is going to be full of joy, a year of friendship and love for all zodiac signs, an auspicious year because the Pig attracts success in all spheres of life.

Last but not least: Having returned from an energising sabbatical, I would like to express my gratitude to Thomas Christ for the stewardship during my absence. Job well done, THANK YOU!

I wish you all a great 2019, health, wealth and success. Xin Nian Kuai Le and Gong Xi Fa Cai.

Kind regards,

Felix Sutter

As last year we conducted a trailblazing roadshow with our sister organization Swisscham in China. This year we will go to Guizhou province, a province that holds promising potential in the area of Fintech, ITC, light industry and tourism, as of an example Apple has based its China data center in the Guizhou province. Sign up and be part of an excursion outside of the usual economic working places in China.
On Feb 1, 2019, NZZ shared useful insights about the Guizhou province and its development. Read the full article here.
