From the desk of the President
|
Dear members of SCCC
It’s already March, and the lunar year
festivities have come to an end with the SHKBA Chinese New Year reception that
took place on 28 February.
The Year of the Pig has already brought us
the opening of the Chinese Visa Application Service Centers in Bern and in Zurich,
offering additional facilities to apply for Chinese Visas.
Many of us have been following the U.S.-China
negotiations, as 1 March – the deadline for the tariff increases – was getting
closer. For the moment, the deadline has been extended, if not averted. It will
be interesting to see in which areas China and the U.S. are making compromises
to reach a deal. Furthermore, it will be a message sent by China not only to
the U.S. but to the whole world how trade will be reshaped and what change
potential is on offer. However, there are so many aspects to the U.S.-China trade
tensions that one treaty alone will most likely not resolve them all.
In the past months, there were some signs
of a weakening Chinese economy. Many of you have noted that state-owned
aluminum producer Qinghai Provincial Investment Group has failed to repay a
U.S. dollar bond in Hong Kong note on 22 February, the first offshore default in
20 years. However, offshore bonds of state-owned companies are thought to be
safe, the government regularly having bailed out distressed companies in the
past. But these developments certainly must be closely watched, and we must try
to understand the signals the Chinese government is sending.
In Guizhou province, the government is
sending a clear signal that they are open for business. Guizhou has evolved from
one of the poorest provinces into a pioneer in big data, cloud computing and fintech.
So far, more than 9000 companies have settled in that industry cluster, among
them the Apple Chinese JV data center. In addition, Guizhou displays the most
stunning nature and scenic attractions. Enough reasons for the SCCC, SwissCham
and the Gesellschaft Schweiz-China to organize a fact-finding mission that
allows you to scout the region before the masses will arrive. It will take
place from 25 to 30 March, please register here.
I wish you a pleasant late winter and a
hopefully early spring.
Kind regards,
Felix Sutter
