From the desk of the President

Dear members of SCCC
The second Belt & Road Initiative Summit in Beijing took place in the last week of April. It demonstrated China’s ability to react to critical feedback and to make changes to initiatives that define the perception of China around the globe, as long as the criticism is fair, reflects reality and is made in a non-confrontational manner. The issue of debt has been acknowledged, the bilateral approach should be replaced by a multilateral approach, and transparent bidding and procurement processes should be installed.
These changes will allow Swiss companies to understand where, when and how they can participate and benefit from the Belt & Road Initiative. The chamber will closely observe the implementation of these changes, and, as always, we want to learn from our member’s observations.
The chamber was able to participate in the Federal Mission to the Belt and Road Summit, the state visit to China, and the technical meetings on ministerial level. It was the third state visit between the two countries within 36 months! A clear sign of the excellent relations between the two governments – not only on a national level, but also in regards to the more technical conversations on ministerial levels and on provincial level.
As we are all looking forward to the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, it has gone almost unnoticed that China is building up its winter sport infrastructure. More than 300 million Chinese are expected to become active in winter sports. The chamber is actively identifying areas where Swiss companies can benefit from this trend and is in the process of setting up a winter sport expert panel that will be dedicated to answer questions from SCCC member companies only, as well as governmental and national associations.
From recent interactions with ByteDance, known for its product TikTok, the chamber has decided to look for a TikTok volunteer. If you are an enthusiast and want to dedicate your skills to the further development of SCCC, please get in touch with us (GM@sccc.ch).
Last but not least, the chamber turns 40 years old soon. In Chinese tradition we start celebrating with our 39th AGM on May 23, 2019. Don’t miss it and sign up!
Kind regards,
Felix Sutter
