From the desk of the President

Dear members and friends of SCCC

The 39th AGM of the chamber went very well. The welcome note of the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Zurich gave valuable insights into the current thinking and positioning of the Government of the People’s Republic. The Swiss Government’s welcome message addressed one of the major misconceptions regarding the trade volume numbers issued by China and Switzerland. It’s all about gold, which represents a large portion of the imports and exports and therefore affects the trade figures. Without the gold transactions, Switzerland has a trade deficit with China, with the gold transactions it has a surplus. We believe the numbers without gold imports and exports are more meaningful and should be used when discussing trade figures between the two countries.

The dynamics of the Chinese economy and the trade dispute between the US and China were addressed as well.  First, the panel provided highly interesting perspectives and addressed many questions regarding the Chinese economy which have been raised also by the media. The mini-lecture by Professor Ding addressed the underlying root causes of the trade tensions between China and the US and explained the symptoms we see today and maybe also in the future. In short, we had a highly insightful AGM, the new format proved to be successful and will be used going forward.

During the technical part of the AGM we voted on new board members, the board is now more geared towards the diversity targets set by the strategy. Moreover, the attending members agreed on a moderate increase of the membership fee. This will allow us to finance the announced projects and initiatives, all of which focus on delivering more value to our chamber members.

The Italian speaking chapter has a new president with Alex Chung, he presented new board members and the strategy. We wish Alex and his team much success in implementing the strategy.

In the newsletter below you will find events that take place in June. The French speaking chapter will participate at the DALIAN WEF 2019 event in late June, if you are also interested in joining please contact the SCCC office in Geneva.

Kind regards,

Felix Sutter
