From the desk of the President

Dear members and friends of SCCC

As you read our October newsletter, the People’s Republic of China is on holidays, or at least in a festive mood celebrating its 70th anniversary.

The past 70 years have seen the creation and rise of a country to the role it had held in previous centuries – China was and is now again one of the world’s leading economies. Today, no major event or development around the globe is taking place without the PRC’s involvement or considering the interests of the People’s Republic of China.

Many developing countries with young populations look at the achievements of China, wanting to learn from them or even copying them. Lifting over 700 million people out of poverty, creating a substantial middle class, eradicating illiteracy and becoming the world leader in manufacturing mass products – and all this over a period of a few decades is not only impressive, it has never been done before. For a Chinese citizen in mainland China life has never been better, nor more stable.

For us in the West it can be uncomfortable to face a competitor instead of a consumer of our products, an important member of the global community instead of an inward-looking giant that could barely feed itself. And sometimes the Chinese government system makes us wonder if our systems are outdated.

The global balance has changed – I believe for the better. Now, all stakeholders must give their best to demonstrate the benefits of their respective systems, and they are measured by the added value they provide for the average citizen. Rules and standards must be evaluated, be it in the area of trade hurdles or helping the environment and economy on a global scale. And only the latter should be acceptable as it will encourage reforms that are both overdue and helpful.

What is the role of Switzerland in all of this? For almost seven decades, Switzerland has been a trusted partner of China. We will continue to play this role, providing our views, recommendations and concerns in a constructive and respectful manner. We are the place, where Chinese companies can flourish, conduct research and be innovative. A home away from home.

With these words I congratulate the People’s Republic of China and its citizens to the 70th anniversary.

With best regards,

Felix Sutter
