From the desk of the President

Dear Members and Friends

Welcome back from your holidays! Many of you have been traveling in the last few weeks, made possible by the significant increase in vaccination rates throughout Europe. Overseas travel remains highly restricted, and the Delta variant means that plans to open borders and remove travel restrictions had to be postponed. As a result, virtual meetings are still often the only way to meet overseas partners.

That is also true for the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting in September. These annual meetings are usually held alternately in China and Switzerland. This year’s meeting will be held virtually, a first in the many years that these meetings took place. The Chamber has prepared input, and we will be present at the meeting as in previous years.

Of course, the virtual format of the JEC will limit the time the delegation members can talk to each other. Informal discussions are key for understanding the bigger context of the economic situation. We are looking for ways to ensure that these essential information exchanges and gatherings can take place, a first opportunity was the Chamber’s Summer Apéro in August in Zurich. If you have other suggestions, please contact our office.

Several economic sectors in China have been subject to recent regulatory changes. Also, the rollout of the 14th five-year plan has started. In light of the dynamic developments in the Chinese economy, we encourage our members to identify and respond to relevant changes and regulatory requirements in their specific industry sector. The Chamber is also monitoring these developments. Please check the website for links and announcements on this topic.

The SCCC board and advisory committee members will meet in early October for their annual meeting to discuss developments in Swiss-Chinese economic relations. The goal is to identify challenges and opportunities for the future and how SCCC can best position itself to best serve you, our members. Preparations are underway to ensure that we have good input for the discussion.

With all this activity, there was no summer break for the Chamber office, but the situation was made easier by the not-so-summery weather. Let’s hope for the summer of 2022!

Kind regards and stay healthy,

Felix Sutter
