Dear members of SCCC

End of April, the annual Joint Economic Commission took place in Shanghai, an event where high representatives of the Chinese and Swiss Government meet and exchange ideas on closer economic collaboration, follow up on initiatives and discuss topics to be improved. It is in the nature of these exchanges that ideas and suggestions remain confidential until they are approved and supported by both governments. Over the past 30+ years we have brought up numerous topics and areas to improve – without exposing an individual company or person, but rather to communicate the state of economic affairs viewed as and reported by SCCC members.

In that spirit we also have participated in this year’s Joint Economic Commission and have made several suggestions. This is one of the crucial services SCCC offers to its members. Against this background, I encourage you to continuously share your ideas and to identify the areas that need improvement in order to further smoothen operations and economic ties between the two countries.

The month of May will bring a SCCC road show to China, the first after many years. What is more, a delegation of members from ten organisations will attend the Sichuan earthquake memorial on May 11 in LongXing, Sichuan. Should you be in the area, please join us for the memorial! (link)

The SCCC back office is gearing up for the annual general meeting on June 14. Amongst other topics, board elections are on the agenda, and we have a fantastic speaker line-up for the 3rd RMB internationalisation seminar in the afternoon of June 14.

I wish you a productive and efficient month of May, as it is loaded with holidays.

Best regards,

Felix Sutter

How China is Buying its Way into Europe

For more than a decade, Chinese political and corporate leaders have been scouring the globe with seemingly bottomless wallets in hand. From Asia to Africa, the U.S. and Latin America, the results are hard to ignore as China has asserted itself as an emerging world power. Less well known is China’s diffuse but expanding footprint in Europe.

Bloomberg has crunched the numbers to compile the most comprehensive audit to date of China’s presence in Europe. It shows that China has bought or invested in assets amounting to at least $318 billion over the past 10 years. The continent saw roughly 45 percent more China-related activity than the U.S. during this period, in dollar terms, according to available data.
