Dear members of SCCC

The year of the dog is living up to its reputation, it is hectic and full of action. The economic retaliations between the US and China open new business opportunities for Swiss and European companies. This is one more reason to look at your China and Belt & Road market strategies.

After the National Party Congress in early March, the Chinese Government filled a number of key positions with new people. Many of them have been labelled as 'reform friendly'. At the same time, certain reforms have been accelerated, such as the Financial Services reforms which will see changes as early as 2018 and not only in 2021. And I am sure I have missed a few important decisions and announcements, such as easier access to Chinese markets.

However, the Chinese market will remain challenging as usual and requires your top management’s attention. The board of the SCCC is addressing these challenges by choosing the appropriate speakers and company visits for the program of the SCCC throughout the year – and for the business delegation to Chongqing and Chengdu. Both are important cities for the Belt & Road initiative, and the West of China is rapidly gaining importance. If you have not signed up yet, please do so now, and secure a seat for this important event.

Earlier in March you received an invitation to participate in a survey. If you have not responded yet, please do so at your earliest convenience. The survey will give us important input for the future services from the SCCC, and will help to make sure that we will provide value to our members not only today but also tomorrow. Results will be published at the Annual General Meeting on June 14, 2018.

I wish you all a great start to spring and good success with your Swiss-China business endeavours.

Best regards,

Felix Sutter

Why Chinese Tech Companies are Embracing a Slower Culture

In a movie with Chinese kungfu star Jet Li, Alibaba Group co-founder and executive chairman Jack Ma defeats eight celebrity martial artists in just 20 minutes. Not only does the mini-film try to portray Jack Ma’s unbeatable position in China’s tech industry, it also references the most commonly cited similarity between the tech industry and China’s ancient martial arts: “There is no impregnable defense, only speed defines the winner”.

If you have been tracking the developments in China tech, it’s hard to ignore this trend: the life cycle of emerging industries – an initial boom followed by the multiplication of competitors and finally market consolidation – is dramatically shortened while startups are forced to move faster in a bid to stay ahead. Apart from startups, other parties involved, investors and regulators, for instance, are also forced to keep up with the shift.
